Where the Sailors Are

April 2, 2015, Simpson Bay Lagoon, St. Maarten

We moved from Great Bay to Simpson Bay Lagoon a few days ago, and now we are where the sailors are. This is on the south west end of the island, close to the airport and close to all the chandlers and tradesmen. This is sailor central. There are mega yachts here, but they aren’t the majority..Most here are the more salty type: dingies are patched, T-shirts are stained, and everyone is tanned. We’re comfortable.

We’ve been trying to price out a radar arch to mount our 260 watt solar panels and attach dingy davits. We also are looking to have a dodger made, to make the cockpit more comfortable on windy, rainy nights. These are both big ticket items, so we have been talking to lots of people, visiting shops, checking out the competitors, and trying to understand the various mini-monopolies and alliances that seem to exist here. Everything is expensive, but we are in the right place to figure it all out.

Enough boat stuff.

Our guests left this afternoon. It was so great having Kamini and little Rowan on board, and we were sorry to see them go. Kam, being a Director at work, was able to direct us to stop “working” all the time and devote some time to play. We went to different beaches, did a day sail, visited Marigot a couple of times, explored the old French fort St. Louis, and ate good food. We felt like proper tourists and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

You are welcome back any time Kam!
