July 20, 2015 Rodney Bay, St. Lucia.
St. Lucia is a puzzling place. We looked forward to it. Moss knew it as a popular British holiday destination, so we thought it would have all the first world amenities and conveniences. And it does — providing that you are in or near a tourist resort or marina. The rest of the island is another story.
We arrived at Rodney Bay, a big, mile-wide bay on the northern shore of the island, in the later afternoon. And again, we were taken by the difference compared to the place we had left.
Rodney Bay is a tourist bay. You find plenty of vacationing Brits, Americans and Canadians staying at the beach front Sandals resort, playing on the beach, jet-skiing, snorkelling and partying late. It is also a place where enterprising locals, some aggressively so, paddle out to your boat to offer all kids of services. It is a lively place and a far cry from the quiet of Dominica and the dignity of St. Martinique.
If it wasn’t for our need for a down day, we would probably have headed south right after check in. But instead we sit back, tune out the bustling activity, and just relax.
Ohmmmmm.
Another change has happened. We are starting to feel the end of this trip. We’ve reached St. Lucia; the next stop is St. Vincent and the Grenadines (if we even go at all, have been warned of high crime), and then Grenada (terminus!). It’s hard to believe.
