Well, some of our friends would say we are nuts. At times we think they might be right.
Our family was four years into existence when a dream took shape: learn to sail.
And then, when the kids are old enough, sell the house and see the world!
Of course it wasn’t quite that simple. But the next 10 years were spent working towards a goal that would give us and our now teen-aged kids a great adventure that is outside the typical Canadian experience.
We’ve renovated our bungalow into a beautiful 2-storey rental property. We’ve cut down to part-time, remote contract work. And we’ve pulled the kids out of school for home schooling. We are ready.
Allons-y!
Who we are
Moss is a former mechanic who turned IT-guy. He is very handy and thinks he can fix anything. Sometimes he can, sometimes his “optimism” gets the better of him.
Anne is a translator by trade and covert nutrition geek. She is trying to inject some sanity into this crazy adventure.
Blake is an enigma inside a riddle wrapped in sarcasm. He is 15.
Niamh is a punker Waldorf child. She says she’s anti-social, but we are not convinced. She is 13.
About the boat
We are not boat experts. I will try to be informative and not sound like an idiot.
Cedar II was built in 2003 by Beneteau in France. She is an ex-charter boat with a GRP (fibreglass) monohull and a fin and bulb keel.
She is 50 ft (14.98), has a rear cockpit and is sloop rigged.
She sleeps 8 relatively comfortably, and 11 uncomfortably. She has 2 rear cabins, 2 forward cabins, with removable dividing wall, each with private heads, and one crew cabin/ collision bulk head. We are using that for storage.
She has crossed the Atlantic at least once and spent her first nine years in the Mediterranean and the Aegean. Right now, she is sailing the Caribbean.
